As Canadians, we are fortunate to have some of the most iconic and pristine wilderness areas in our very own backyard. Each year, 75% of Canadians participate in outdoor recreation activities, and over 22 million overseas visitors come to spend time in our beautiful country, many of whom hope to see our epic mountains, endless lakes and unique wildlife. In fact, outdoor recreation is such a part of the Canadian identity, that it contributes $98 billion to our economy each year.
So we have to ask, why is it so hard to get to outdoor recreation destinations?
As citizens, we should be able to enjoy the many natural gifts our country has to offer, without having to spend a small fortune on gas, or contribute to the climate problems that have such an outsize impact on these spaces.
If Canada is to remain competitive, create regional jobs and meet its emissions reductions goals, we need a National Transportation Strategy that includes rural and outdoor recreation destinations. Being outside is the quintessential Canadian experience - and we all have a right to enjoy that.
Join POW Canada in calling for our government to make this a top priority.
