THE OIL CAP CAMPAIGN

Canada has committed to reduce emissions in order to help the world get to its Paris targets. However, the government is still predicting a 21% increase in O&G production by 2030. For us to truly make these climate goals, we must implement realistic caps on both emissions and production.

Background:

  1. The Canadian Oil & Gas industry is the nation’s largest annual source of Greenhouse Gas Emissions. In order for Canada to fulfill both its domestic and international climate commitments, there must be a stronger, more equitable, emissions cap system implemented in this industry.

  2. As the world switches to clean energy, capping emissions is also an opportunity to steer our economy in a more competitive direction and to position Canada as a leader and innovator of this global transformation.

  3. A stringent federal cap on oil and gas emissions means Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions could start going down and we could meet our international and domestic climate targets, something every prior federal government has failed to achieve.

  4. The federal government is seeking public input on emissions caps, including specific caps for the oil and gas sector. This is our chance to stand up to Big Oil lobby groups and let Ottawa know that Canadians don't just want a plan on emissions, we want action!

This policy proposal is a critical chance to start us on a credible path to reduce emissions from the oil and gas sector, and ensure an equitable future for all Canadians.
