CLIMATE CHANGE VS. WINTER SPORTS; CAN ATHLETE ACTIVISM CHANGE THE SCORE?
At POW Canada, our Athlete Ambassadors are out in the mountains and glaciers all year round. They see the changes in the landscape first-hand, and for many of them, these changes can result in unsafe competition and training conditions. Many of these athletes feel they have no choice but to speak up.
Most recently, this could be seen in an athlete-driven petition for the FIS to adjust its World Cup calendar in order to accommodate for warming temperatures, while committing to increased climate action/leadership.
But can athletes effectively use their voice and platform to make a difference in the fight against climate change?
This study from the University of Waterloo surveyed 390 elite winter-sport athletes and coaches to understand the efficacy, effectiveness and challenges associated with athlete climate-activism.
