With thousands of wildfires across the country already this season, we’re experiencing the type of megafire season climate scientists have been warning about for decades. In BC alone about 1,250 wildfires have charred 4,560 square kilometres of bush since the start of B.C.’s fire season in April, compared with the 10-year average of 658 fires and about 1,060 square kilometres burned over the same time period. If the social impacts of wildfires and climate change isn’t enough to motivate action on the part of governments perhaps the economic impacts of wildfires will.
