EDMONTON CLIMATE ACTION

The Edmonton POW Chapter, in partnership with the Edmonton Mountain Bike Alliance, is embarking on a crucial climate action initiative focused on trail maintenance and cleanup activities in the Edmonton River Valley. This initiative not only aims to enhance the recreational experience in the area but also underscores the significance of environmental stewardship. By maintaining trails and keeping the River Valley clean, the chapter seeks to highlight the intrinsic connection between outdoor recreation and conservation efforts.

The Background

The Edmonton River Valley, spanning over 7,300 hectares, stands as one of Canada's largest urban parks, boasting a diverse ecosystem and over 200 kilometers of single track. With the City of Edmonton initiating stakeholder consultations for the National Urban Park designation, there's a pressing need to showcase the multifaceted values of this natural space. Through collaborative efforts with local organizations and active participation in stakeholder engagements, the Edmonton POW Chapter aims to advocate for a balanced approach that preserves the ecological integrity of the River Valley while catering to the recreational needs of Edmontonians.

We Need Your Support!

At the heart of this initiative lies the objective of fostering community engagement and building capacity for environmental advocacy. By organizing regular trail maintenance activities and garbage cleanups, the chapter seeks to empower outdoor enthusiasts to become advocates for climate action. These efforts not only demonstrate a tangible link between direct action and environmental stewardship but also lay the groundwork for the chapter to emerge as a significant stakeholder in the ongoing discussions surrounding the National Urban Park Initiative.

Upcoming Trail Maintenance Days:

June August
July September

The success of this climate action initiative hinges on community participation and collaboration. Volunteers are encouraged to join trail maintenance sessions, contribute their time towards preserving the River Valley, and engage in discussions with local policymakers. Through collective action and grassroots advocacy, the Edmonton POW Chapter aims to effect meaningful change and pave the way for a more sustainable future for Edmonton's natural spaces. Join us in taking a stand for our environment and becoming stewards of the Edmonton River Valley for generations to come.

Let Your Voice Be Heard

Another method of support is through direct communication. We urge community members to amplify their voices by sending the below pre-drafted email to city council members and decision-makers, advocating for the preservation and advancement of the National Urban Park Initiative. Every email sent represents a collective call to action, urging policymakers to prioritize environmental conservation and sustainable land use practices. By taking a few minutes to lend your voice to this cause, you can play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Edmonton's natural landscape. Let's stand together in solidarity, advocating for the protection of our precious urban greenspaces and ensuring they remain accessible and vibrant for generations to come.
