CONNECTING RECREATION WITH CONSERVATION

Edmonton POW Chapter's Trail Maintenance Initiative

The Edmonton POW Chapter, in collaboration with the Edmonton Mountain Bike Alliance, launched a vital initiative focused on trail maintenance and cleanup activities in the Edmonton River Valley. Our goal is to enhance both the recreational experience and environmental stewardship in this area. By maintaining trails and keeping the River Valley clean, we are showcasing the intrinsic connection between outdoor recreation and conservation efforts.

The Edmonton River Valley, spanning over 7,300 hectares, stands as one of Canada's largest urban parks, boasting a diverse ecosystem and over 200 kilometers of single track. With the City of Edmonton initiating stakeholder consultations for the National Urban Park designation, there's a pressing need to demonstrate the multifaceted values of this natural space. Through collaborative efforts with local organizations and active participation in stakeholder engagements, the Edmonton POW Chapter aims to advocate for a balanced approach that preserves the ecological integrity of the River Valley while catering to the recreational needs of Edmontonians.

At the heart of this initiative lies the objective of fostering community engagement and building capacity for environmental advocacy. By organizing regular trail maintenance activities and garbage cleanups, we empower outdoor enthusiasts to become advocates for climate action. These efforts not only demonstrate a tangible link between direct action and environmental stewardship but also lay the groundwork for our chapter to emerge as a significant stakeholder in the ongoing discussions surrounding the National Urban Park Initiative.

Together, Let's Make a Difference

The success of this climate action initiative hinges on community participation and collaboration. We invite all passionate outdoor enthusiasts and community members to join us in our upcoming trail maintenance days throughout the summer. Your participation will directly contribute to preserving the Edmonton River Valley's ecological integrity and enhancing its recreational appeal.

Upcoming Trail Maintenance Days:

  • July 2, 6:30pm-9:00pm: EMBA/POW Trail Day with Trail Sisters Edmonton, Westpointe Trails (South Edmonton)
  • July 26, 6:30pm-9:00pm: Arc'teryx Edmonton x POW Canada Plogging event, Emily Murpy Park
  • July 30, 6:30pm-9:00pm: EMBA/POW Trail Day with the ACC Edmonton Chapter, MacKinnon Ravine (Central Edmonton)

Another way to support this initiative is through direct communication with decision-makers. We urge community members to amplify their voices by sending a pre-drafted email to city council members and other policymakers, advocating for the preservation and advancement of the National Urban Park Initiative. Every email sent represents a collective call to action, urging policymakers to prioritize environmental conservation and sustainable land use practices. Click below to send an email with us.

Together, we can ensure that this natural urban greenspace remains accessible and vibrant for generations to come. Join us in taking a stand for our environment and becoming stewards of the Edmonton River Valley. Let’s work together to build a sustainable future for our community.
